A non associative effect is one produced by some process other than by the systematic correlation of one stimulus to another. The first possibility is labeled "hue generalization". This confound would be caused by the physical similarity of the hues rather than that position with respect to the relative "time to food."

In this test, four birds were each exposed to different stimulus orders. The results showed that the rate increase was attributable to temporal position not hue similarities, because the rate increase was correlated with the consecutive stimuli across the latter portion of the interval not the hue similarity. Rates fell off as a function of time preceding food. rather than as a function of hue similarity to the hue of the stimulus immediately preceding food.
