The existing paradigm does not easily integrate associative responding to explicitly unpaired stimuli. As a result, some adjustment is necessary. This can be accomplished by either redefining the term contiguity to include stimuli which would have previously been considered explicitly unpaired, or by invoking additional processes. It could be asserted that the obtained results define the degree of contiguity or the degree to which conditioned reinforcement or serial conditioning would be expected to support behavior in the present situation. Unfortunately, redefining terms to account for results would be tautological and, therefore, useless.
